Educating Today's Child For Tomorrow

Week 5: 10.05.21

Throughout this week we have continued our growing topic. Most of our caterpillars have gone into their chrysalides (cocoons) which the children have been very excited about. We then introduced the story of ‘Jasper’s Beanstalk’ by Nick Butterworth.

Just like Jasper we have decided to plant some of our own beans in class. Each child put the soil and beans into a cup and watered them. Now just like Jasper we need to wait for our beans to grow. Of course this meant there was a writing opportunity that we grabbed. The children have begun to record the stages in a ‘bean diary’.

In Phonics we have been doing a big push on recapping the sounds that we learnt including especially the trigraphs ‘ear’ (Hear with your ear), ‘air’ (That’s not fair) and ‘ure’ (sure it’s pure). These sounds can be hard for the children to remember and spot in words so please keep practising them at home with your child.

In maths this week we have been recapping all of our number learning from before. Looking especially at fives frames and tens frames and how we can show our numbers. We then used a tens frame and a fives frame to talk about numbers that are bigger than ten. We used the language ‘I have ten and one more’, ‘I have ten and 4 more’ etc. Using this language is very important when helping the children understand that these 2-digit numbers are made up of tens and ones. We were very impressed with how well the children were picking up these tricky ideas.

Well done for getting through our first full week in a while! See you all on Monday!
