Educating Today's Child For Tomorrow

Week 6: 12th October 2020

Happy Friday Green class!

Another fun week has been had here. We've carried on our learning about Autumn and Harvest time by learning a lovely song called 'Big Red Combine Harvester'. We recorded ourselves singing it today and Mrs Cooper is going to be busy making a lovely video of all the children in school singing, saying prayers and talking about Harvest time. This is to replace our usual annual Harvest festival that we hold in school but will be lovely as you get to watch it in the comfort of your own homes now! If you're lucky, you might even get a private showing of the song if you ask your children nicely!

We looked at the story 'The Little Red Hen' this week. We read it and watched videos of it too. It's all about a little hen who wants to bake some bread but doesn't get any help! We made actions up to help us remember the story (our version has a pig, duck and rat as the unhelpful animals) and then we practise retelling it as a class. We have started making a big story map to help us remember too and now the children are making their own story maps, using their sounds to spell out the names of the animals. It's lucky that we know so many sounds now!

The story made us think about how the two letter 'c' and 'k' together still make one sound which is 'ck' as in 'duck' and we looked at tricky words 'I' and 'the' as well to help us with our writing and reading of the story. These two words cannot be sounded out and we just have to remember them and sight read them.

As well as that new Phonics learning we also learnt some new sounds too. This week our focus sounds were 'u' 'r' and 'e'. We thought about words beginning with these sounds, practised our handwriting of them and then they really helped us in our writing for our story maps as they come up in lots of the animal names.

We consolidated our learning about the number 3 and then looked at triangles and how they fit in to this. We practised describing them by talking about them having 3 sides and 3 corners. We looked at some simple number sentences too and decided that 2 'and another' 1 'makes' 3 can be written like this; 2 + 1 = 3. We spoke about what the symbols mean and how we could use 1 + 1 + 1 = 3 as another way to make 3. We linked this to coins and numicon too.

Then we started looking at number 4. We watched the 'Four' Numberblocks episode and thought about why the Number 4 character is a square. This linked nicely in to our numicon shape as well. Isn't it lucky that all our learning fits in together so nicely!

Next week we are going to carry on with number 4 for a little longer as there's so much to think about with each number. And we are going to carry on retelling, making story maps and writing about 'The Little Red Hen too'. And hopefully we'll get it all finished, just in time for half term!

Have a lovely weekend all of you! Rest lots - we've got one more busy week to go!

Oh and don't forget to pick up a copy of the Watford Observer this weekend as well. There's a lovely photo in their of Green Class!
